Root Canal Treatment in Doreen

You have probably heard many dreaded rumours about root canal treatment, but root canals actually help to relieve pain and save your tooth. The association of pain and root canals come from the symptoms – not the treatment. Rest assured that our dentists are extremely gentle.

Why Not Just Remove the Tooth?

We offer gentle root canal treatment at Doreen Dental Clinic because saving your natural tooth is the most conservative and often least expensive option.

Tooth extraction can lead to other dental conditions like a shifting bite, requiring a dental implant or dental bridge to replace the tooth.root canal doreen vic

What Causes the Need for Root Canal Treatment?

If you have an infection inside your tooth or at the tips of the roots, we may recommend a root canal to alleviate the toothache and swelling and to save your natural tooth from extraction.

What Are the Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection?

At first, the infection within the tooth may be asymptomatic. As the infection progresses, some of these common symptoms may appear:

  • Swelling of the gums, face or jaw
  • Toothache and jaw pain
  • A small fistula (pimple) on the gums
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Throbbing, heartbeat-like pain
  • Pain that increases with pressure or lying down

Typically, root canal infections will not resolve on their own and require a visit to your Doreen emergency dentist, where we will work to restore your comfort and provide palliative care for your tooth.

What Is the Root Canal Process?

Your dentist will then follow the basic following steps:

  • Make a small access point to the tooth’s canal or canals
  • Clear out the infection using rotary endodontic tools for comfort
  • Sanitise the inside of the tooth and place medication
  • Place a rubbery substance inside the tooth to close the canals
  • Place a temporary restoration on the tooth while it heals

You may or may not require medication following treatment. Your dentist will talk with you about this. Your dentist will then monitor healing and have you return to the clinic for a final restoration once your tooth is healed. We often recommend a dental crown for load-bearing teeth because root canal teeth can become brittle after treatment.
